ELIZABETH CITY, NORTH CAROLINA, SATURDAY EVENING, JULY, 10. 1920 NO. 162 SOUNDS KEYNOTE COMMITTEE OF 48 Allen McCurdy, Temporary Chairman, At Opening of Convention Today Denounces Democrats and Republicans Chicago, July 10. Delegates summoned to Chicago by the Committee ol' Forty Eight and and the single tax representa tives met to-day in the prelimi naries of an attempt to nomi nate a fusion Third Party Pres idential candidate who would run on a platiuini satisfactory to both elements. The first work was the elec tion of a commit tee on platform ijnd procedure Allen McCurdy, secretary of the Committee of Forty Eight, was selected as temporary chair man. Chicago, July 10 The Republi can and Democratic parties were de nounced as the "right and left wing of the same bird of prey" at the op ening of the proposed "Third Party" national convention here today. Sounding the keynote of the as semblage called together by the com mittee of"4S to adopt a platform and place in the field another set of can didates for presidency and vice-presidency, Allen McCurdy. temporary chairman charged that the two big parlies had evaded paramount do mestic issues at a time when what the country mods is "fewer laws and more freedom The ahuli'imi of special privilege, .Mr. McCurdy .-aid. was the issue ll'of nd whii li t!te new par'y would appeal to the x oiers in November, lie said the party purposed effecting that end through lemming the sources from which privilege derives its power. "To accomplish this purpo-e.1' he declared, "it proposes public me: cr.-h ; p of I ranspori at ion and of i a principal basic resources of iin country and declares t bat all land held out of use lor --peculat ion 1 1 1 1 11 1I he urced into use for taxation "Consider the actual conditions under which we meet After years of sect et slavery the Republican party and the Democratic party, come into the open and reveal themselves to themselves and to the nation as noth but the right wing and the left wing of the same bird of prey. It is no longer possible for any one even to pretend that there is any difference on any issue between them. There is not a wor in either of their plat forms that might not have been written and unanimously endorsed by a convention exclusively composed of corporation lawyers and Wall .Street bankers. "The Republican bid is bold. It reads out of its councils every man and woman who ever stood for any human rights; adopts a platform that .evades, equivocates or straddles every living issue; paves the way for a war by which. In exchange for the lives and treasure of the people, Mex ican oil shall be delivered to the in terests; and consistently crowns its work by nominating for the Presi dency a proven steady, wheel-horse politician, guaranteed to stand with out hitching. Thus stands the party of Abraham Lincoln in the last days o its decadent faithlessness, naked and unshamed in its servile service of a greedy plutocracy " KENYON ASKS REPEAL OF APPROPRIATION St. Louis, July in Repeal of the appropriation granted by the last congress to the Department of Jus tice to fight the high cost of living will be demanded by Senator Kenyon . n the ground that it was used pri marily to boost Palmer for the Pres idential nomination, Kenyon annouu-,-d today MOVES HEKE FROM HKKTI'ORD Charles V. URGES NEED OF BROTHERLY LOVE I Pastor Blackwll Memorial Bap- tist Church Writes Upon Unchristian Attitude of "Snob and Snob-her" (Hy Dr. G. W. Clarke) The Dictionary delines the snob a "a vulgar pretender to gentility or superior position one who regards wealth or position rather than char-! acter." If this definition be correct ! and dictionaries can usually be counted on, then we have in this country many "vulgar persons ." j What is the source of snohbing'.' The devil of course for all vulgarity springs from him. God is no respee lor of persons, therefore it does no: come from Him, and there is only one other source- Salatl. Heboid the nations over which Satan has reigin d i all these years. India for instance I What do we liml? Snohbing is the order of the day All the people are divided into cla-se.s rulers soldier-, business men and tillers of the soil, and one class has no social inter course with another. This is heath enism in India, and snohbing is hea thenism in America. Brought over from heathenism in the old country, and those who indulge in the habit should return to the land of heuthen ism from which this practice came, for it is as unAinerican as It is un christian. We would welcome a law which compelled every one to earn an honest living this would in a measure do away witli the contemtible snob. "Why should human flesh be proud? The only answr we know is because it has the devil in it. Why a man or wom an whose parents have made a little money, and who has had a little schooling just enough to hurt, who can play cards splendidly, and who can dance divinely, who can stay up all night and sleep all day without any conscience whatever, who can wear fine clothes, a rag of which could not be made by the wearer, can snob a decent hoy or girl who earns his own living by honest labor, who buys his own clothes, who pays his own Church dues, who defrays his own expenses in all the walks '" life and industry, and "looks the whole world In the face for ho owes not my man" is to be explained in only in one or two way-, namely, the snob, or snob-her is either weak minded, or vulgar and there may possibly be a little of both of these unfortunate elements In this land of the free there is sure to come a reaction by and hy, and woe to the snub, the parasite, the proud fool who has presumed all these years to feed upon the labor of one hundred per cent American men and women. It will be a blessed day when Amer ica rids herself of all the relics of bar barism and becomes thoroughly de mocratized In business, society and religion then and not until then will we have made America a lit place in which to live, move and have our being as the greatest nation on the face of the earth.
